SPINNAKER UNSPUN

We are motoring (no wind againL) from White Lake, MI to Frankfort. Suddenly we catch a gust of downwind air and Jeff eagerly crawls into our “garage” aka aft cabin and lugs out our asymmetrical spinnaker, big smile on his face.  This is our break, finally some wind!  So Jeff sets all the lines and I’m raising the spinnaker halyard when WHOOPS
the halyard shackle comes loose and the spinnaker falls in the lake while the shackle and halyard wrap around the upper stroud between the top spreader and the masthead. We quickly put the motor in neutral so as not to shred the spinnaker and Jeff hauls the soaking wet spinnaker out of the water. The big smile on Jeff’s face has been replaced by such of look of dejection I could cry.  Here he is cozily surrounded by his drenched spinnaker looking up in disbelief at his dangling spinnaker shackle.

Wonderous journey to all,
Pam

  4. So.... does someone have to go up the mast to get the spinnaker halyard?

I always considered spinnakers beyond me, climbing masts too :)

  5. The halyard stayed where it was until we got to the marina that night. The next morning I went up above the second set of spreaders with the ATN Topclimber that makes going up fairly easy. I'll post a 'technical' desciption with pictures in the future. Jeff
