Lake Erie is a rather tempestuous body of water. Probably
because of her long fetch and relatively shallow waters, at the least
provocation she works herself up into a complete frenzy.
But I’m not making
excuses for her. Let’s face it, if Lake Erie were human, he/she would probably
be seeing a shrink weekly and be on mega doses of Xanax. Lake Erie makes Lake
Michigan look like Lake Placid. We literally “breezed” through our final two
Lake Erie stops of Dunkirk, NY and Port Colborne, Ontario CN. We were able to
sail non-stop on both legs in 15-20 knot winds, 2-4 foot waves and of course a
few rogue 6 footers. We arrived at Port Colborne marina just in time to tie up
as the winds steadily increased throughout the day and by evening we were
experiencing gale force winds. The good news is that I’m starting to get much
more comfortable sailing in higher winds and waves. Lake Erie has desensitized
me!
Jeff is not always impeccable with his timing of relaying
key information. Before we went to sleep and now that we’re at the end of our Lake
Erie experience, he informed me that Lake Erie is “considered one of the more
challenging and even dangerous of the Great Lakes to sail”. Ah so that’s why we saw so few pleasure
and commercial craft on the water… In this case his timing was absolutely
perfect!
Wondrous journey to all,
Pam
